Moon Lyric Breakdown

Updated: Jun 6, 2021

Time to talk about single #2Moon. Yes, I am aware that the first two singles I released are ridiculously stereotypical in content and naming. But hey, we have to start somewhere, right? If you are too worried about what others will think about something you will never reach your dreams. Plus, such a basic idea means there is nothing better to do than grow!

BACKGROUND

Moon released in January of 2020. I had a number of songs that were ‘completed’ in terms of demo and picked this one out of the bunch to bring into the studio. It was the one I wrote the quickest, but also felt the strongest about.

For those that don’t know me well, I grew up in a split home. My two homes were in different states making it difficult to frequently go between them. As a result throughout the year and especially on holidays I was acutely aware of missing one or the other of my parents in experiences that as a child I considered important. Looking on with an adult perspective obviously changes the amount of importance placed on those emotions, but I wanted to write something from that child-like perspective. There are few things more painful for children than to feel like they are missing something important.

I’m pretty sure that viewpoint is not obvious when listening, especially given when my little brother (9 at the time) listened to the song he said, “who died?!”.

LYRICAL BREAKDOWN

White light filtering down

Mmm it's full tonight

Darkness trying to hide

Mmm the tears I've cried

I don't want you to see

How much it hurts to be away

I don't want you to know

That I cry

Myself to sleep at night

The bell-like sound at the beginning and end of the song reflects the child-like reality and mindset. The first verse is both the first and last think heard. It is a bookend indicating leaving and returning to reality.

In the intro a child is laying in their bed staring at the sky through the window while thinking about someone they miss. However, they don’t want anyone else to know they are sad.

So instead I look at the moon

Instead I pretend you're here with me

Mmmm

Instead I pretend that you're

Looking down on me

Staring down on me

Staring down on me

The chorus is a transition from reality to a dream where the child is pretending they have a connection with the person they miss simply by looking at the moon that is visible no matter where they may be.

Stare at the haunting moon

Hope that you're looking at it too

This is my connection

In my mind

To you tonight

Howl like a wolf inside

How do I wish you hear my call

I don't know what to do

Without you

Supporting me in life

No matter what I fantasize

It won't help in the end

When reality comes crashing down

I must let it in

It's not a magic mirror

It won't change anything

I must embrace the present

And get on with it

Returning to the verse and bridge also returns the child to reality. This is one of the reasons there is such an abrupt stop change between the different sections of the song. The image of a haunting moon and howling wolf are used to continue the dark melancholy theme.

In all the entire thing can be summed up to: I miss someone, I wish they were here, this makes me sad. I guess I see why my brother thought it was a song about death. If that is how you perceive it and it helps you work through those feelings, by all means that very well can be another truth to the meaning.
